Are nutritionists covered by insurance?
Yes — nutrition counseling is often covered under the Affordable Care Act as preventive care. Many insurance plans cover sessions in full when billed under preventive codes — no referral needed. However, benefits vary by plan, so it’s important to verify your coverage.
How do I know if my plan covers this?
You have two options:
- Option 1: Submit a secure inquiry form, and we’ll verify your insurance benefits for you — including visit limits, copays, and referral requirements.
- Option 2: Call your insurance company directly using the steps listed below:
To check your nutrition coverage:
- Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
- Ask if Full Precision Health is in-network with your plan. If needed, contact us for your dietitian’s NPI number.
- Ask if nutrition counseling (CPT code 97803) is covered under diagnosis code Z71.3.
Helpful questions to ask:
- Is prior authorization required?
- Is Z71.3 covered as preventive care?
- Is a secondary medical diagnosis required?
- Is there a session limit, copay, or deductible?
- Does this go toward my deductible?
What should I do before my first appointment?
After scheduling, just complete your new client paperwork at least 48 hours before your session. It only takes 5–10 minutes and ensures we’re prepared to deliver effective, personalized care.
This paperwork:
- Gives us your consent to work together.
- Allows us (if you choose) to coordinate care with your medical team.
- Helps us tailor your session based on your health history and goals.
We also recommend verifying your insurance coverage ahead of time — see the “How do I know if my plan covers this?” section above or email us at info@fullprecisionhealth.com for assistance.
Why do you require my credit card information even though I am using health insurance ?
A credit card is required to be kept on file for all of your nutrition visit(s). There are four scenarios under which your credit card will be charged:
- You failed to verify your health insurance prior to your visit and you do not have nutrition coverage. Therefore, your health insurance carrier rejected the claim submitted. You are therefore liable for the full amount of the visit which is $180.00.
- You canceled your visit without providing at least a 24-hour notice.
- You did not show up for your scheduled nutrition visit. You will be charged $50.00. (Note: If a valid charge is disputed, a $25.00 service fee will be assessed in addition to the original amount owed to cover staff time to mitigate the dispute. If full payment is not received by Full Precision Health PLLC within 30 days, your account may be sent to collections or small claims court.)
- Your insurance company informs us you have a co-pay, deductible, or co-insurance applicable to your visit. Your card on file will be run in the amount your insurance company dictates is your responsibility.
So – if you verify your health insurance, show up for your nutrition visit on time, and don’t have an applicable co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible – there is absolutely, positively no charge for your nutrition visit provided you have nutrition coverage.
